MONTE ALBAN
The civilization of Monte Alban flourished from 500 BC until 1500 AD. This zone is located 10 km (6 mi) from the city of Oaxaca; it is found on a hill and is composed of a large rectangular plaza where there are palaces, temples, oratories, ball courts and tombs. The Zapotecs founded it in 500 B.C. and it flourished until 700 A.D., utilized also by the Mixtecs.
There is a Site Museum, parking lot, guide service, bookshop and cafeteria.
It is not hard to imagine the feeling of power and dominion that the Zapotecs must have experienced when overlooking the wide and amazing panorama of the valley stretching out below them.
